The eligibility conditions

Before getting started with the process, it is essential to verify that the conditions for applying

for French nationality by naturalisation are met. There are several criteria that must be met,

including:

1. Residency in France:

The applicant must have resided in France for at least five years regularly and continuously. This period may be reduced to two years if the applicant has successfully completed two years of higher education at a French higher education institution, with the aim of obtaining a French diploma. However, no length of residence is required for applicants who have been granted refugee status or who have completed military service with the Foreign Legion.

2. Integration in French society:

Applicants for naturalisation must demonstrate sufficient integration into French society. This includes, but is not limited to, a command of the French language (level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), knowledge of French history and culture, and adherence to the principles and values of the French Republic.

3. Morality and criminal record:

The applicant must have a clean criminal record, including overseas. Indeed, criminal convictions handed down abroad are verified as much as criminal convictions handed down in France.

The establishment of the naturalisation file

Once all the conditions have been met, the applicant must put together a strong file which will

then be examined by the prefecture of his place of residence. This file must include several

documents, including:

- The application form duly completed and signed;

- A complete copy of your birth certificate and those of your parents (a translation

of the birth certificates will be required if the documents are not in French)

- A complete copy of your parents’ marriage certificate (a translation of the marriage

certificate will be required if the document is not in French)

- Recent proof of residence;

- Proof of legal residence in France (e.g. residence permits);

- Documentation of resources and employment status (e.g. wage slips, employment

contract);

- A birth certificate for minor children, if applicable;

Filing and maintenance of the application

The application must be filed with the naturalisation platform of your place of residence. If you reside abroad, the application will be submitted to a French consulate. The prefecture will then examine your file for completeness and validity. If the file is complete, a deposit receipt will be issued to the applicant. Otherwise, the applicant will receive a letter indicating the missing documents from the file, which must be sent over as soon as possible. After this first stage, the applicant is summoned for an individual interview at the prefecture. The purpose of this interview is to evaluate the mastery of the French language and to ensure adherence to the values of the French Republic. It may also include questions about French history, institutions and culture.

Waiting period for the decision

Processing time may vary depending on the prefecture and the complexity of your case. Generally, it takes between 12 and 18 months to get a response. The prefecture then issues one of the following three decisions:

1. Naturalisation Agreement: The applicant officially becomes a French citizen after having participated in a welcoming ceremony, after having taken an oath. The acquisition of French nationality is then carried out by decree of the Prime Minister. L’acquisition de la nationalité français est alors opérée sur décret du premier ministre.

2. Refusal of application: If the application is refused, the applicant has the possibility to appeal administratively to the Ministry of the Interior.

3. Adjournment of your application: The application may be adjourned, i.e. the applicant will have to wait a period of time before being able to file a new application for French naturalisation.

From putting together the application to the interview at the prefecture, each step must be carefully prepared. Acquiring French nationality is a privilege that offers important civil rights, but it also requires full integration into French society.
